Vanajan Keksit Oy is a Finnish baked goods producer known for its delicious wafers, biscuits, and crispbreads. While our treats might steal the spotlight, behind the scenes, we’re hard at work making choices that care for the planet, people, and generations to come. Our sustainability strategy is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which guide our daily operations. Our goal is to be a leader in responsible bakery production in the Nordics.
Our Sustainability Efforts ARE Aligned with the UN Goals
SDG 2: Zero Hunger
Vanajan’s approach supports food waste minimization and a circular economy. We’ve achieved a 100% utilization rate for production waste—all possible waste and by-products are either reused in new products, directed to animal feed, or converted into bioenergy. For example, crumbs and imperfect pieces from waffle production are used in the creation of new products, with allergen contamination, traceability, and other food safety aspects carefully considered. This ensures that no raw material goes to waste, while also contributing to the global fight against food waste.
We continue to invest in technologies and processes that optimize resource use and further reduce waste.
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Vanaja promotes consumer well-being by offering healthier options in selected product categories. Currently, our range includes products with the Heart Symbol, which meet strict nutritional criteria for salt, sugar, and fats. Our goal is to expand this selection and bring more products to the market that support well-being and encourage healthy lifestyles.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Vanajan’s commitment to responsibility begins with the sourcing of raw ingredients. We are currently developing an ethical code of conduct for our suppliers to ensure that all partners adhere to ethical working conditions and environmentally sustainable practices. Additionally, we aim to source as many ingredients as possible domestically. While ingredients like cocoa are exceptions, we choose local alternatives whenever possible.
We said no to palm oil over a decade ago.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
We are committed to reducing our environmental impact in both production and packaging. The circular economy is a key part of our business operations—we use cocoa that is always certified (Rainforest Alliance), and we said no to palm oil over a decade ago. Additionally, all of our packaging materials are 100% recyclable. With these actions, we aim to lower environmental impacts and support responsible consumption.
SDG 13: Climate Action
We understand the food industry’s critical role in combating climate change, which is why our climate efforts focus on reducing energy consumption, utilizing renewable energy sources, and optimizing resource use. Reducing our carbon footprint begins with accurate measurements. We are building systems to monitor and analyze our emissions in real-time. This data provides a clear picture of our impact and guides our decision-making, allowing us to direct actions where they are most effective and impactful.
Our goal is also to significantly increase the share of renewable energy by 2030. This involves exploring opportunities to utilize renewable energy and improving energy efficiency in our bakery operations.
Responsible Baking through Certified Processes
Our responsible operations also include ensuring food safety and quality in our products. The foundation of our work is high-quality practices guided by EU food legislation and other legal requirements, as well as the FSSC 22000 food safety standard. Our food safety efforts are monitored by independent third parties and authorities.
Our approach to environmental matters is systematic and aligns with the requirements of the ISO 14001 environmental management system.
