The world wastes an alarming amount of food every year, and the food industry plays a significant role in this issue. At Vanajan, we have always believed that every ingredient deserves to be used in the best possible way. If a cookie crumbles or breaks on its way out of the oven, we give it a second chance—it may, for example, end up as part of a waffle filling.
How Do We Do It?
Reducing waste is not just a promise for us; it’s a concrete practice that’s visible in our daily operations. Our production process achieves 100% utilization of waste and by-products.
1. Reusing Broken Products
When biscuits or other products break or are left over during the production process, they don’t go to waste. Instead, these crumbs are repurposed in our products, such as fillings or in other production stages. This not only saves raw ingredients but also reduces the amount of waste created.
2. Repurposing By-Products as Animal Feed
Not all surplus from production can be reused in food products. When biscuits or other baked goods don’t meet the requirements for reuse, we direct them for use as animal feed. This ensures that by-products from production are put to good use.
3. Converting to Bioenergy
If there’s anything left that isn’t suitable even for animal feed, it is turned into bioenergy. This means that any waste we cannot repurpose in our products or as animal feed is utilized for energy production.
Crumbs are repurposed in our products, for example as part of fillings.
Waste Management is Circular Economy in Practice
At Vanajan, we view the circular economy as a fundamental part of our business operations. This means that every step of our production is planned to minimize waste as much as possible. Broken cookies, production surplus, and even by-products of raw materials are given a second life. We are continuously developing new methods to utilize everything generated during the production process—this is an important step toward a more sustainable future.
Why Is This Important?
Food industry waste is not just a financial loss—it’s a significant environmental issue. Wasting food also means that valuable resources like water, energy, and materials are being used in vain. By committing to reducing waste, Vanajan not only minimizes waste but also conserves natural resources, reduces emissions, and supports sustainable development.
A Bite-Sized Look into the Future
Sustainability is a long-term journey, and at Vanajan, we want to be at the forefront of this path—with baked goods that are good for both you and the environment. When you enjoy Vanajan products, you can be confident that every bite has been made with the smallest possible environmental impact. Because a biscuit should leave crumbs, not a big environmental footprint!
